LabCorp Update
Join our info picket!

LabCorp Bargaining Team: Shelby Tyner, Nancy Pyanowski, Kyle Chrisman, Matt Noll, Deborah Gibby, Sam McVay, Lisa Magee

“Mediation feels like its working, and we’re making good progress on closing our open language proposals. But we know what we’re doing is clearing the way for our real battle: wages and benefits. We know that we must fight to win a fair contract, and we’re ready to. It’s time to act.” – Kyle Chrisman, Patient Service Techician

Last week, we met with LabCorp to continue negotiating our union contract. This was our second session with a federal mediator from FMCS, and it was as productive as the first. However, LabCorp’s economic proposal is still a far cry from solving our short staffing crisis. LabCorp has made it clear that they want to pay the bare minimum for labor while patient samples continue to be shipped out, draw sites are closed daily, and crucial positions remain unfilled. So join us on the picket line next Friday and tell LabCorp we demand better!

Informational Picket

Friday, April 12 @ 12pm—2pm
Swedish First Hill (at the park on Broadway and Marion)
Scan to RSVP or go to: mobilize.us/ufcw3000/event/613424/

We need you there! We’ll be providing shuttles from James Tower to the picket line on First Hill and back, so please join us when you’re on your break, off-the-clock.

What’s an informational picket? Workers walk, carry picket signs, chant, and share leaflets to let our community, patients, and providers know what we’re fighting for and how they can help support us.

Is it similar to a strike? No. Staff scheduled to work should go to work. Patients scheduled for care should go and get their care. The specific purpose of the action is to communicate the issues we have at the table with the public.

Is it legal? Yes. It’s not just legal, it’s our right as union members!

Who can picket? Everyone. By everyone, we mean EVERYONE: you (all off-the-clock LabCorp members), your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, patients, allies, and pets!

Can I get in trouble if my manager doesn’t like it? No. It is illegal for supervisors to question or discipline any staff for talking about or participating in an info picket. The National Labor Relations Act protects your participation in this type of union activity – even if you’re on probation!

What if I can’t make it? Get a friend, neighbor, or coworker to stand in your place. Every single person makes a difference!

LabCorp Pushing Forward!

LabCorp
PUSHING FORWARD!

Our Union Bargaining Team: Nancy Pyanowski, Kyle Chrisman, Sam McVay, Lisa Magee, Matt Noll, Shelby Tyner, Deborah Gibby

Our LabCorp Union Bargaining Team met with Management on July 19 to continue negotiations. We were presented with their 2023 Healthcare, Vision and Dental insurance plans and dove deep into plan changes, benefit expansions, and cost projections. We presented new proposals on work-from-home stipends, automatic enrollment for Free Lab Testing, vehicle take home options for Service Reps, and limiting premium repayments after returning from leave.

Management did not come with counterproposals or answers to our questions from last session. Despite this, we pushed forward with our discussions on staffing metrics and hiring plans for departments like Accessioning and Cytogenetics that have been understaffed and overworked for more than a year, despite our co-workers urging Management to take action.

“We had a long and unproductive day in negotiations. Management is still delaying and failing to respond to any of our proposals or questions. Nevertheless, we continue to come to each session prepared, fired up, and ready to negotiate a fair contract. We insist Management do the same on August 1.” – Sam McVay, Customer Service

LabCorp - Negotiations Continue

LabCorp
Negotiations Continue

Our LabCorp Bargaining Team met with Management on June 29 to continue negotiations. We proposed additional holidays (MLK day, Juneteenth and Veterans Day) to recognize Union members of color and former service members. We made proposals to address issues with excessive overtime, understaffing, and mandatory schedule changes. We also proposed additional bereavement and union leave, penalties for untimely resolution of paycheck errors, more training for management on medical leave processes, and better access to HR.

NEXT CAT MEETINGS:
Thursday, July 13 on Zoom
9am—10am and 6:30pm—7:30pm

NEXT BARGAINING DATES:
July 19 and August 1

“We shared your stories about overtime and staffing problems. Unfortunately, although we come prepared every session with full proposals and explanations for them, management has chosen not to respond to our contract language proposals and deferred addressing previous issues until they receive all our economic proposals as well. This delay tactic is unacceptable! Despite this, we remain prepared and ready for action as we head into our next two negotiations sessions.” —Matt Noll, Cytogenetic Technologist

Labcorp - February Update

After working so hard and being so understaffed for years, and after LabCorp refused to renegotiate your wages to recruit and retain staff, the time is drawing near to address your needs through the bargaining process. In a few months, your colleagues will sit across the table (or virtually) from management to negotiate your wages, staffing, healthcare, and so much more for the next three years.

BUT! Great contracts are not won at the bargaining table, they are won in your workplaces!

Join your colleagues for a virtual meeting on Sunday, February 19 at 10 AM or 6:30 PM to strategize your plan to win substantial wage increases and improvements to your benefits and working conditions. We’ll discuss what must be done if you are to win the crucial improvements you need and deserve. To really build enough power to move management at the negotiating table, your coworkers should join you as well. If you’re unable to attend Sunday’s meeting, please call Christie to set up a one-on-one, or a group to learn what must be done. We can meet in person, virtually, or even over the phone!

Finally, your mandatory overtime grievance is headed to Federal Arbitration this month!

The contract says that they cannot mandate overtime for chronic short-staffing reasons yet LabCorp continues to violate this right that you worked so hard for! We’ll keep you posted.

Does management tell you that it’s the union’s fault that they cannot give you a raise? Nothing could be further from the truth! Ask for a merit raise and show them this language from your contract,

“9.4.1 Additional merit increases may be given at the discretion of the Employer, in addition to, but not in replacement of, 9.4 above.”

Here’s the link to your entire contract, call your rep if you’d like a hard copy.

Did you know that you’re allowed to talk about your union and your working conditions on the clock? This is federal law and is also protected by the federal courts! As long as your speech doesn’t interfere with your work, you may talk about wages, staffing, building power, your upcoming contract negotiations and so much more. Call Christie if you have any questions.

Call Christie Harris anytime you have a question, a concern, or if you simply want to learn more about your union and your rights and benefits!

What is our union doing to make our workplace better?

We have several grievances currently ongoing including the payroll crisis, the missing 401k contributions, and mandatory overtime. We’ve demanded to bargain the installation of GPS trackers on the courier vehicles. We’re also working to resolve ongoing issues, such as:

  • Inappropriate and false messaging - Yes, the contract says they can give you a raise!

  • New employee orientation - LabCorp says it’s too difficult to email the agreed-upon union welcome letter to the new hires.

  • Unknowingly reassigned job descriptions/classifications other than what you were hired for

  • Difficulties in taking breaks/lunches

  • And much more!

We’re continuing to build our power for more fair and just workplaces. At our next monthly virtual meeting, Sunday, August 28, we will strategize a plan to win a strong contract next year, including substantial wage increases to recruit and retain staff. Improvements will be on the table, such as:

  • An option to take home your courier vehicle

  • Stronger protections against mandatory overtime

  • More affordable health care

  • Better call-in pay/language

  • And much more!

“We met with Management on Monday, January 11 and Friday, January 15 to continue negotiations for a new contract. Monday’s session was cut short due to unforeseen circumstance beyond the employer’s control. While we had hoped to reach a deal on Friday, we are disappointed to find that we are farther apart than expected in both wages and healthcare. We are faced with some difficult decisions for the next bargaining sessions but are committed to reaching a fair deal that addresses as many of your concerns as possible.”

Dynacare Labcorp - Management Came to the Table Unprepared

2020 1223 - Labcorp Update.jpg

We met with Management on December 18 to continue negotiations. We reached some agreements on language issues and got closer on some proposals, but we are still apart on:

  • Wages

  • Healthcare

  • Pandemic Response

“Once again Management came to the table unprepared. After giving them a comprehensive new wage proposal at our last session, we are frustrated that Management did not come to the table with a response today.”

— Eli Lanczos

On December 11 we met to continue negotiations. We spent the day working on wages and some language proposals.

Dynacare LabCorp - LabCorp Union Members Deserve Better!

2020 1207 - Dynacare Labcorp.jpg

As we work hard to bargain better wages and working conditions for union members, we received reports from the membership that LabCorp has extended COVID related bonuses and incentives for extra shifts ONLY to Non-Union staff. UFCW 21 has not only asked for these monetary bonuses for Union members but have made several other proposals during Negotiations that LabCorp continues to refuse.

We have proposed:

  • Significant market adjustments to several job classes currently below market—LabCorp said NO

  • Incentive pay for OT shifts—LabCorp said NO

  • Incentive pay for last minute schedule changes—LabCorp said NO

  • Hazard pay for Union Staff—LabCorp said NO

  • Across the Board increases of 11.5% over the life of the contract—LabCorp offered 4.5%

“These are classic techniques used by companies to bust up the union and it’s going to fail! We demand to be treated fairly, just like  other employees at LabCorp. These sneaky moves by LabCorp are  deceptions designed to divide us. We will bring this up next week in negotiations. We Will NOT stand for this! Let’s get fired up and ready to fight for what we deserve!”

— Eli Lanczos

Let’s show Management their tactics will not work and that we are 100% united for fair Wages!

You can help by signing the petition here or reach out to your Bargaining Team and Union Stewards for a paper copy to sign by December 10, 2020!

Dynacare Labcorp - Continuing Negotiations

2020 1124 - Dynacare Labcorp2.jpg

Your Bargaining Team met with Management to continue negotiations. We spent the day discussing wages and market data analysis. It was a productive conversation as far as understanding where each side was coming from on our respective wage proposals BUT we are still very far apart in actual numbers.

“Management called our wage proposal ‘A tall order and Unrealistic’. We are fighting to ensure our wages are competitive in the market and reflect the skill level and hazards that we face on a daily basis. The goal is to recruit and retain high quality staff. We need to show we are united on wages to win.”

How we win fair wages!

Dynacare Labcorp - “Frankly, Hazard Pay is Trendy”

2020 1117 - Dynacare Labcorp2.jpg

On Monday, we continued our discussion on Pandemic safety, scheduling, and staffing. We are happy to announce that we have reached an agreement on our Staffing committee proposal, which includes stronger language that compels the employer to seriously consider the committees proposal and the ability to grieve Management’s response.

We saw some movement from Management on our scheduling and Pandemic safety proposal, but we need to keep up the pressure to secure the language we need. We plan to shift our focus onto wages in the next sessions and would love your input as we move forward.

“According to Management even though it’s an inherently hazardous job, during the pandemic we are not entitled to hazard pay because we signed up to work in healthcare. ‘Frankly, hazard pay is trendy’ was the response we got on our pandemic safety proposal. We believe this a disrespectful and inappropriate response from Management as it doesn’t take into account the additional hazard of working during a global pandemic.”

— Fredel Albritton

OUR BARGAINING TEAM: Fredel Albritton, Steph Royce, Eli Lanczos, Sam McVay, Nancy Pyanowski, Shelby Tyner, and Tambra Graham.

We are committed to working together to settle a fair contract for all of our members. We have your backs at the bargaining table but to win, we need to show LabCorp you to have our backs in the field!

We are taking action to show Management we are United to win a fair contract and protect ourselves and our community during this global pandemic.

We have created a list of four central demands and are asking all LabCorp members to sign on! UFCW 21 has also provided medical grade masks and Face-Shields for our members.

Dynacare Labcorp - LabCorp: Protect Your Frontline, Not Your Bottom line!

We met with Management to continue negotiations this week. We had another in depth conversation about the staffing crises and Pandemic safety protocols. We hope to see some counter proposals from Management on these issues at our next bargaining date.

“Staffing is short and so is our patience! Management came to the table woefully unprepared, once again. We spent 3.5 hours discussing staffing, scheduling, and COVID PPE. We even had to explain to them the difference between medical grade vs non-medical grade face masks. That is unacceptable!”

— Sam (Sherry) McVay

This week, members are taking action by stickering up to show support for the bargaining process. Get your sticker from a bargaining team member to show you stand with us for a FAIR contract.

Dynacare Labcorp - Management is Not Hearing Us!

2020 1012 - Dynacare Labcorp2.jpg

A few agreements were reached today but more work needs to be done. Today we had a long, focused discussion with Management about the on-going concerns we have heard from you all around staffing problems and schedule changes. We have also extended the contract through January 15, 2021.

“Management is not convinced that staffing is a major problem at LabCorp. We spent a lot of time giving them examples of how widespread and systemic staffing and scheduling issues are through-out several departments, and they are not just isolated instances.”
