Meet Naomi Oligario, UFCW 3000 Delegate to the 2023 UFCW International Convention

Every 5 years, the UFCW International Union holds a convention where union leaders from across the country meet to discuss the future of our union and help set its direction for growth. The 2023 UFCW International Convention will be held in Las Vegas, beginning today, Monday, April 24, 2023 and concluding Friday, April 28, 2023, or until all business is completed and the Convention is adjourned.

Naomi Oligario is an elected delegate to this convention and believes the UFCW International Union must be accountable to its membership and build real power for workers in all essential industries, including grocery, retail, cannabis, packing and processing, and healthcare. The purpose of any union is to build collective worker power to improve safety, wages, and working conditions, and amplify the voices of workers in their workplaces and communities. As a rank-&-file member, she knows how important this fight is.

Naomi Oligario has worked at Port Orchard Safeway for over 37 years! She started as a courtesy clerk before working her way up to produce & front end. Throughout the years, she has trained countless other grocery store workers, all while getting to know customers as they’ve grown up and built families of their own. Naomi is a respected workplace leader, which is why she ran on a slate of candidates from our local committed to fighting for a better UFCW!

UFCW International has decreased spending on critical organizing campaigns and discouraged coordination on our most important bargaining campaigns. This, combined with a large amount of investment in the stock market has been one of the factors that have contributed to the shrinking number of members in the UFCW year after year. This is why our delegation is proposing a set of reforms to invest in organizing, coordinating bargaining with national employers, and modernizing strike authorization so that bureaucracy doesn’t prevent workers from holding their employers accountable at the bargaining table.

Our delegation believes the UFCW must change in five fundamental ways: 

  1. UFCW members must have a democratic voice in their International Union.

  2. UFCW must be a powerhouse union that fights for all essential workers. 

  3. UFCW must prioritize new organizing and invest in organizing campaigns, organizers, and new winning strategies.

  4. UFCW must commit to coordinated bargaining across the USA and Canada.

  5. UFCW must engage in strategic planning to counter corporate power and meet the challenges that face our movement and our democracy.

UFCW 3000 Member Story: Connie Schlosser

Today is #WorkerWednesday and we want to recognize Connie Schlosser, who is the head bookkeeper at Rosauers Supermarket #107 in Spokane, WA. Connie has worked for Rosauers for 40 years!

As a child, Connie has vivid memories of shopping for groceries at the Rosauers just down the street from her house. These days, Connie is a cornerstone of her community, with so many people having gotten to know her and appreciate the work she does in the store.

Connie is so well loved & respected by her coworkers and the community members who shop at Rosauers because she goes out of her way to ensure everyone is treated fairly. Many of her coworkers and fellow union members have commented on how she makes a real effort to support people, whether at work or off the clock; one colleague even said that “Connie is the store’s mom!” Connie is an excellent home baker; she will frequently surprise coworkers with homemade treats, whether they are celebrating someone’s birthday or just because it’s a Friday.

Connie loves her family and has been married for 31 years. One of the reasons she has stayed at Rosauers for 4 decades is because of the affordability and quality of her union healthcare, which has helped her raise 2 children. On her off time, Connie enjoys road trips to visit family and to see the sights at places like Leavenworth. Speaking of time off…after 40 years of working in grocery, Connie is looking forward to retirement! She doesn’t know exactly when it’ll happen, but she knows it’s coming soon.

Connie — thank you for all that you do to help coworkers, fellow union members, and folks in the community feel welcome and part of the team! We are excited for your well-deserved retirement and wish you all the best!

UFCW 3000 Member Story: Victor Diaz

It’s time for another #MemberMonday! This week, the spotlight is on Victor Diaz, who works at Mid Valley Hospital in Omak, WA.

Victor has worked many jobs throughout his career, from retail to construction. During his time in construction, Victor worked at non-union companies. Throughout the years, however, Victor learned more about unions and how worker-members come together to fight for rights and protections at work. Victor loves to give back to his community, and when the opportunity opened up for him to become a healthcare worker, he took it. He was even more excited to learn that his position was represented by a union and has been a proud UFCW 3000 member ever since.

Fun fact: Victor is a 7-year volunteer firefighter captain for his local community in Riverside, WA! Victor — we’re so inspired by how you give back to your community, and we’re so glad to be a part of your team.

UFCW 3000 is Committed to Fighting for Reproductive Justice

UFCW 3000 is committed to fighting for Reproductive Justice.

As Union members, we know that our right to control our labor hinges on our right to control our bodies. And now, more than ever, workers and our bodily autonomy are under attack.

Health Care Workers, including UFCW 3000 members at Planned Parenthood in Washington State, are at the forefront of providing vital reproductive health care services.

However, since the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, reproductive rights are no longer protected for everyone in the U.S.

Washington State law guarantees the right to choose, protecting access to reproductive healthcare and abortion services. However, unless healthcare workers have a voice on the job to advocate for themselves, their patients, and their communities, these vital reproductive health services could become inaccessible to many.  

Now is the time to take action in support of reproductive justice, health care workers, and those impacted disproportionately by the SCOTUS decision: women, people of marginalized genders, trans and non-binary people, Black and brown people, the disabled, and the poor.

“Navigating the for-profit healthcare system as a Planned Parenthood clinic worker has been hard enough. The overturning of Roe v. Wade will now make our patients suffer with longer wait times, fewer resources, and expensive travel costs. It's time for the Labor movement to rise and join women’s rights organizations and others and say enough is enough. We need to lay the groundwork to push back against these attacks on our basic rights. They are being taken away before our very eyes - voting rights, women’s rights, civil rights. It goes on and on. Roe v. Wade was won in the first place because the people rose, and with women leading the charge, demanded a change to the laws that put us in danger and threatened our health, threatened our freedom and threatened our economic future. Only a fighting approach can save our rights to protect equitable and affordable access to women’s health care and abortion on demand, without apology.” — Natalie Snitzer, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, Hawai’i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky*

How can my patients lose a right we’ve had for 50 years?

"I’ve been working in health care for 39 years; most of that time has been in maternity and caring for new-born babies at Tacoma General Hospital. For that entire time and long before, women have had the right under federal law to make decisions about our own bodies, our health, our reproductive rights, and whether or not we are pregnant. That has been the law for 50 years. Now these rights have been taken away by those who want to push our nation backward. Our country should be going forward, not backward. We should be giving all women more access to health care, not adding restrictions that harm women, especially women who may be of lower income or women of color. We’re all at risk.

"I have raised my daughters to understand that they control their own bodies. They are responsible for their actions. That is one way that they stay safe, and all moms want their kids to be safe. As a mom, I don’t want the Supreme Court or Congress – most of whom are men – telling our daughters that they cannot make decisions for their own health, their future. This is 100% a woman’s right and should be made by women. If that right can be taken away, that’s not only a problem today for our reproductive rights, but it’s also a slippery slope for tomorrow and could lead to other rights taken away. We need to protect our privacy

"Our Right to Privacy must be protected. It’s one of the most important rights we have in the United States. I have read the opinion released from the Supreme Court and I feel it is actually about so much more than a women’s right to choose if she has an abortion. If the government can invade our privacy so much that they can tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her own body around something so private as her own health, her reproductive health, where does it stop? Then we’re all vulnerable to having our privacy taken away by elected officials who feel differently than we do. Then what’s next? Freedom of speech? Freedom to vote? Freedom to be part of a Union? Freedom of religion? That’s not what our country is about. Our freedoms should not be taken away. But let’s not fool ourselves, that is exactly what is happening here and that is wrong." — Shannon Corrick, File Maintenance, Safeway*

Unfair and not right

"I am so enraged by the fact that we as a country are going backwards on women’s rights to access reproductive health care and control of our bodies. These rights are a baseline for establishing a life and living with the freedom to control your future. I believe Health Care is a human right -- and it’s private -- it’s between a person and their doctor. It’s hard because, as workers, we want to do what’s right for our patients, but changes to the law could tie our hands. I’m concerned that some states like Kentucky have passed heartbeat legislation requiring ultrasound technicians, like me, to make women hear the heartbeat before making any reproductive health decisions. That is unfair and simply not right. It puts health care workers in a position of shaming and guilting patients, instead of treating our patients with the respect and privacy they deserve in moments that are very personal." — Bryana Kolppa, Sonographer, Kaiser Permanente*

It’s about our future

"This is not just a question of reproductive rights. This is a question about will women have a say on own health, our own financial future. One of the biggest causes of poverty for women in our country is having a child as a single mom. If that is something a person decides to do, that is fine. But a person should not be forced by our government to become impoverished just because they become pregnant. We need to invest in family planning, we need to invest in access to health care. We need to push back against the Supreme Court’s decision to strip away our most basic rights and pass a new law to put these protections in place for all women in our country. It is not right that just because of your income or the zip code you happen to live in, that you have different rights than someone else." — Liisa Luick, Sales Associate, Macy’s*

This should worry everybody

"It makes me angry. This is the 21st century in America. How can half the population be told she can’t control her own body? How can a bunch of old white men – and that is mostly who makes up the US Senate that has confirmed these Supreme Court Justices – how do they get to choose what a woman does with her body when so many men can’t seem to control their own. Let’s be honest with each other. If men were more responsible with their bodies, most unwanted pregnancies would not happen in the first place. This right should not be determined by what state a woman happens to live in. When I was younger, I’d go to Planned Parenthood to get birth control because that’s what I could afford. Next they will want to take away the right to contraception. We need more education, more access, and more care. Not less. And if they can take this away, this right after 50 years, as a Naturalized Citizen, I fear that my right to vote may be next. This should worry everybody who holds our democracy dear." — Kyong Barry, Front End Supervisor, Albertsons

My body. My choice.

“Forcing our healthcare system to go backward in the regard to our rights is unacceptable. The simple statement of “My body, my choice” should be reason enough to stop allowing our government control of our bodies and life choices. Birth control is never 100% effective. And there are reasons we have advanced our healthcare system to include safe abortion options; not all pregnancies are viable or safe to carry to term, some are a result of rape, some may cause a family to become financially unstable. We have the right to consider and act on all of those complicated factors for ourselves, without the government’s input. We have the right to choose our own future, no one else gets to decide that for us. We need to stand together and fight for our rights. It’s Monday, and that means it’s time for another #MemberMonday spotlight! This week, we are lifting up the leadership of Petra Cavazos!

Petra currently works as a packaging & production worker at Draper Valley Farms in Mt. Vernon, WA. She’s been there since 2002 and has been an exceptional workplace leader for many years. In fact, starting in 2015, Petra stepped up and into the role of shop steward, helping her coworkers access the help they needed to advocate for themselves.

Her leadership was truly on display when the COVID pandemic began. Although Petra had to take a Leave of Absence, due to being high-risk, she still kept in contact with her fellow union members. Her coworkers frequently reached out to her for help dealing with issues at work. And even though she could not be present physically, Petra was more than happy to continue being a knowledgeable and approachable resource for her coworkers.

Since returning to work, Petra has continued to sit in on Weingarten meetings, helped new coworkers learn about their rights at work, and encouraged others to get involved to address workplace issues. Petra — thank you so much for being such a friendly and reliable steward! Your leadership is so inspiring.

UFCW 3000 Member Story: Rachel Brings the Union Difference to the Pharmacy!

This week’s #MemberMonday spotlight features Rachel Putnam, proud UFCW 3000 member and Pharmacy Tech!

Rachel has wanted a career in healthcare for as long as she can remember. From early childhood, she has been fascinated by the human body and how it works; because of this, Rachel decided to pursue a career in Pharmacy! Rachel says: “I chose this path because I have taken daily medication since I was 8 years old, so the pharmacy has always played a pretty big role in my life.”

Rachel joined Group Health in 2014, which later was acquired by Kaiser Permanente. Reflecting back, Rachel says that “what I admired most was their promotion of innovative healthcare. The world is always changing, as is the world of medicine, and this is a company that not only changes with it, but also promotes change for the better.”

 If you spend even a few minutes with Rachel, it will become very clear to you that she is very passionate and knowledgeable about her work! Her coworkers know this very well because, in 2021, Rachel became a Union shop steward. Rachel wanted to step up as a leader because she wanted to do her part to bring about change for the better and to fight for workers’ rights in her workplace. In her words: “Every worker is a person, and therefore every one of them should have a voice. Employees are not just employees — they are human beings with families, their own goals and dreams, and lives outside of the workplace. I became a steward to be part of making this more widely acknowledged and respected.”

In talking about what victories are just around the corner, Rachel is confident she can help her workplace improve! “My goal as a Shop Steward is to make a difference in how workers are treated, and push alongside my fellow stewards for better staffing, better working conditions, better pay, and more protection for workers who face bias or unfair treatment. I want to be a part of something bigger than myself, and to be a part of driving the change that will allow working people to have the influence and respect that they deserve.”

Since becoming a shop steward, Rachel has become more involved with UFCW trainings for Stewards, delivered strong messages in videos about Safe Staffing legislation, and continues to participate in monthly Steward Workshops to gain more knowledge and to ultimately help her coworkers stand together for the change they want to see at work!

UFCW 3000 Member Story: Tamra Empowers Coworkers

Another week, another UFCW 3000 #MemberMonday spotlight! Today, we're featuring Tamra Cabuco.

Tamra works at LabCorp and is an extremely hard worker who loves her job and uplifts her coworkers. Most of all, Tamra cares very deeply for the patients she helps -- and they love her too!

Tamra is so dedicated to her patients. Sometimes, due to short-staffing, she is forced to work her entire shift with no break or lunch because she wants to provide the proper care for all of her patients. Tamra knows that she and her coworkers deserve to rest, eat, and hydrate while on the clock. She also knows that the best way to enact fundamental change is for her and her fellow workers to unite and organize for their rights at their workplace.

That's why Tamra is leading the charge as a workplace leader, educating coworkers on their rights at work, and bringing awareness to the community at large about the challenges she and her coworkers face. Tamra is fighting so that she and her fellow LabCorp employees get the respect that they deserve from a company that posted earnings of over 16 Billion dollars in 2021!

Tamra is empowering coworkers to be the change they want to see in their workplaces and we couldn't be more inspired. Go Tamra!

UFCW 3000 Member Story: Rebecca's Balancing Act

It's #MemberMonday and today's spotlight is on UFCW 3000 member Rebecca Landers!

Rebecca works as a nurse at Providence Mount Carmel in Colville, WA. She is very involved in her workplace, participating actively on both the Professional Practice and Leadership committee and the Staffing Operations Council. Rebecca is also a member of the FMC UBC.

Outside of her work in healthcare, Rebecca is a proud mother of two boys, Garrett and Corbin. Rebecca travels extensively with Corbin, who is on the 16U AA Hockey team for the CDA Hockey Academy. In fact, recently, his team won the Idaho State Championship and is headed to Troy, MI in April for the National Hockey Tournament! Meanwhile, Garrett has started his own botanical fish tank business and imports plants from Indonesia for resale. Both boys are succeeding academically as well and are both attending Head Start.

It is clear that Rebecca is doing a wonderful job of balancing being a mother, nurse, and a workplace leader! Members like Rebecca are amazing representatives and leaders of UFCW 3000. #UnionStrong

We are over 50,000 workers strong!

By joining forces, we are strengthening our ability to win better contracts and to organize more workplaces where workers want a union. Ultimately, this merger will help us build power with workers across many industries who do not yet have a voice.

As Shannon Corrick, who works at Cheney Safeway, says: "The corporations we work for are getting bigger all the time and they treated us very poorly during COVID. This merger makes us a much bigger union so we can take them on, and win better wages and safer workplaces."
