UFCW 21 is the largest private-sector local union in the state of Washington with over 45,000 members working in grocery stores and retail, health care, and other industry jobs. Our membership is diverse in many ways: living across Washington State, economically diverse, essentially all ethnic backgrounds, more than half women, and people of all ages. We have a commitment to building a powerful union that fights for economic, political and social justice in our work places and communities.
UFCW 21 members use our collective strength to stand together for fair treatment, economic justice, and family wage jobs. We stand together not only in our workplace and at the bargaining table, but also through engagement in our community and the democratic process. Big corporations and the wealthy hold immense power within our political system. Union membership provides an antidote to this disparity in power and affords an important means for workers to come together and have a voice in our democracy.
If our questionnaire seems a little different, that is because we are not interested in the “business as usual” of politics. We are looking for candidates who are not afraid to champion bold legislation that will challenge corporate dominance and improve the quality of life for workers. And we are looking for candidates who recognize that worker organizations play an integral part in building a fair economy and democracy.
We look forward to sharing information about you with our membership. Your answers on this questionnaire will help guide us in that process. We require all candidates seeking our endorsement to complete our questionnaire.
