In order to make our voices heard on issues like health care, overtime, and family and medical leave, we need to elect politicians who will stand up for us — and hold them accountable once they’re elected. Otherwise, corporations will be the only ones who have a say in our rights.

Our union is a non-partisan organization. When we evaluate candidates and make endorsements, it’s not based on party labels, and it’s not a popularity contest — it’s an effort to find out who will stand with us, and who can drive the changes we need.

Two candidates on your primary ballot have earned our union’s endorsement because we’re convinced they can help us win the kinds of changes we need. After careful review of the candidates’ records and the issues at stake, our union endorses:

Justice Charles Johnson for State Supreme Court. For 18 years, Justice Johnson has been a strong voice for fairness, justice, and efficiency in our courts. Opponents Jim Beecher and Frank Vulliet are simply not qualified to serve, with almost no judicial experience between them. Your vote is key: this race could be decided in the primary.

That’s why UFCW Local 21 is a leader in the Healthy Washington Coalition, which unites dozens of unions, community groups, and health care providers behind the goal of securing quality, affordable health care choices for Washington families. Our agenda includes:

The Office of the Insurance Commissioner should have the power to review and approve health insurance premiums. We need to limit the insurance companies’ ability to deny benefits and price people out of the market for individual coverage.

The Local 21 Rapid Response e-mail list is a tool to keep union members better informed and strengthen our ability to take quick action when necessary.

If you sign up for the Rapid Response list, you will receive occasional e-mails asking you to take action such as:

Send an e-mail in support of working family issues
Attend a rally or a legislative hearing
Make phone calls or send letters to politicians, CEOs, or the media
Help us get out the vote during election season

We know that not everyone will be able to take action on every issue, but just like in contract fights and organizing drives, everyone has an important role to play in making our union stronger.
