2012 State Legislative Agenda
Our 2012 proposals for legislative action are focused on building a stronger economy and fair treatment for working people. If implemented, they would begin to re-balance tax and social policies that have increasingly served corporations and the 1%. We are in the midst of the great recession and people are struggling to make ends meet. Workers in our state need lawmakers to champion their issues and address their needs.
It’s time to check off some wins for the 99%.
Economy
We call on lawmakers to pass a jobs bill that will put people back to work and put our economy on the road to recovery.
We call on lawmakers to fix our state budget crisis. We reject an all cuts budget approach, support closing tax loopholes, and making the wealthiest amongst us and corporations pay their fair share.
Health Care
We call on lawmakers to pass legislation, which would require non-profit hospitals to report the full compensation packages of their top 5 non-medical staff executives, including their CEO. (HB 2229)
We call on lawmakers to implement the Health Care Exchange that works for workers.
We call on lawmakers to improve patient safety and protect worker rights by passing legislation that would assure uninterrupted meal and rest breaks for health care workers, and prohibit mandatory overtime.
Marriage Equality
We call on lawmakers to pass marriage equality for all people, and provide full equal right for all our members.
Paid Sick Days
We call on lawmakers to make sure workers have access to paid sick days. (HB 2508/SB 6229)
Protecting Workers at the Port of Seattle
We call on lawmakers to pass legislation, which would keep in place long held agreements with the Port of Seattle to retain experienced workers, including those who are UFCW 21 members, and treat them fairly. (HB 1832)
E-Verify
We call on lawmakers to make it optional for businesses to participate in the federal E-verify program, so workers aren’t subject to unfair immigration practices at work.
Preventing Corporations from Hijacking Our Initiative System
We call on lawmakers to limit the amount of contributions that corporations can give to a political initiative. (HB 2500)
