Decisions made in Olympia and in Washington, D.C. directly impact the lives and paychecks of Local 21 members, and their families, and communities. That’s why we get involved in politics: to make sure that the needs and voices of working families and union members are taken into account when decisions get made on issues like Family and Medical Leave, overtime, workers compensation, and sexual harrassment.
Local 21 is a non-partisan organization, supporting both Republicans and Democrats. We don’t go by labels, and we don’t tell anyone how to vote, but we believe it is our responsibility to let our members know where candidates stand on issues that affect working families.
People Powered Politics at Local 21 has several different dimensions:
- We register Local 21 members to vote. More votes means more power, so the more union members who register, the more power we have when we defend important workplace protections, push for new legislation, and ask politicians to support us.
- We endorse and give support to candidates and ballot measures.
- We take action to support our issues through an e-mail activist list
- We make sure Local 21 members are well informed about issues like health care, overtime, ergonomics, workers’ right to organize a union, and other issues that affect them at work.
