Marriage Equality Act Passes Washington State Legislature On Wednesday February 8, 2012 the Washington State House passed the Marriage Equality Act with a 54-43 vote. This was just one week after the State Senate had passed the bill on a 28-21 vote. This issue is one that UFCW 21 has supported for some time and is part of our agenda for 2012. When our Board, which includes 35 workers representing our membership, voted to endorse the proposal, board member Scott Shiflett, a Safeway meatcutter, was quoted in the local news saying, "this was a no brainer, it is a civil rights issue." UFCW 21 is continuing our long-standing effort to reform the way meal and rest breaks happen for far too many hospital workers. We are working with others to keep up the pressure to make sure that nurses and other hospital workers are able to take uninterrupted meal and rest breaks. For years, hospitals have abused a system that allows them to interrupt workers’ meals and rests and this abuse results in many workers going long shifts without sufficient rest or food. “The need for all hospitals workers to get real meal and rest breaks is important for workers as well as our patients. We need the law to change to protect us,” said Jeanette Power-Cooper, a surgical tech with UFCW 21 who works at Auburn Regional Medical Center.
