Health Care Workers
Sacred Heart Update
Highline Medical Center Update:
UFCW 21 represents over 11,000 workers in Health Care across the state including: MultiCare Health System, Harrison Medical Center, Group Health Cooperative, Children's Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Providence Health System, as well as other health care employees at other worksites. During 2010 and 2011, thousands of health care workers, community allies and their friends and family joined together in action after action during the fight for a fair contract at MultiCare. Ultimately, these actions, and the solidarity and courage of the workers led to a fair contract being negotiated and approved by the members. This advertisement that appeared in the Tacoma News Tribune (click on the image to the left to see a larger version) helped gain public awareness of the fight for a fair contract.
While the contract does not contain everything we wanted, significant gains were made in wages and the workers’ protected their health plan and pensions. This was a great example of the various units – LPNs, Professional, Technical, Service and Engineering all working together and being able to achieve more that they could along.
Another example of one of the dozens of health care contracts in UFCW 21 is at Capital Medical Center in Olympia. Back in 2009 bargain, workers were successful in their efforts to win a new contract. By working together and standing strong, they were able to fight back attempts to weaken their contract.
